Winners tells the story of a pair of teenage lovers, Joe and Mag, who are expecting a baby out of wedlock. The play finds the two students in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland in 1966, on a hillside studying for their end of school exams.

In Afterplay, Friel uses two of Anton Chekhov's characters, Sonya Serebriakova from Uncle Vanya and Andrey Prozorov from The Three Sisters. The two meet in a cafe in Moscow, twenty-or-so years after Chekhov has left them.
